Scalp SOS: Your Essential Guide To Treating a Troublesome Scalp

SCALP SOS: YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO TREATING A TROUBLESOME SCALP

What are the symptoms of an unhealthy scalp?

Many of us know the feeling of an itchy scalp very well, trying as hard as we can to not scratch, the temptation for those seconds of relief is often too much. When you have an irritated scalp and you scratch it, it flakes, leaving those flakes where you want them least. There can be so many different scalp imbalances and these imbalances can sometimes lead to hair loss.

Having scalp issues can be embarrassing, leaving you conscious about your hair in public, if that’s you, you are not alone, we know exactly how you feel, we have come across so many people suffering in silence not knowing what to do and we’ve made it our mission to help.

What causes an unhealthy scalp?

When we are stressed scalp issues can easily crop up. We forget that our scalps are an extension of our skin, because that part of our body is hidden by our hair we can’t see what’s underneath. The thing many people don’t know is that so many products actually are the cause of imbalances and irritation and if you  already irritation many products can make it even worse.

The main culprits are products that don’t clean your hair enough or the complete opposite and they clean your hair and scalp too much. Using products that do either of these can quickly cause imbalances in your scalp microbiome. Dandruff, although often confused with dry scalp, is a scalp issue caused by a fungal over-growth (Malassezia). This is mainly caused by an imbalance of the fungal biome when harsh detergents used in cheap shampoo strips the scalp, leaving it bare. Not only does this leave the scalp dry and irritated but can also lead to the fungal layer over growing, developing in to the yellowy flakes of Dandruff.

The scalp naturally secretes sebum all on its own to try and hydrate and moisturise itself, however this can often leads to greasy roots and very often more aggressive washing, then before you know it you unwittingly enter into a vicious greasy cycle, the more you wash the more greasier or more drier your scalp can get. I’ve been exactly where you are, right now googling ‘how to treat an oily/itchy/irritated scalp’! But your search is over you’ve come to the right place, we are here to help.

How do I begin the process of revitalising my scalp?

First things first, we need to give your scalp a little extra TLC, we created CENTRED to start with the scalp and have created a simple routine to help you start putting your scalp first.

1. Use our pre wash En Root Scalp Oil, to help moisturise a dry itchy scalp and help balance a oily one. Our En Root is an oil based cleanser and is fantastic for both of these issues as oiling will really help hydrate but also help regulate sebum levels resulting in cleaner roots for longer. It is perfect to use to oil on the scalp for issues such as dandruff and psoriasis andwith our easy to apply nozzle this allows you to apply the oil directly to your scalp.

2. Massage into your scalp with your hands or Squishy scalp massager and leave the oil for as long as possible – ideally being 20 minutes to 2hours – perfect for a long soak in the bath,a film on Netflix or that yoga class you’ve been wanting to do, leaving the oil on for longer allows all the ingredients to really penetrate into your skin.

3. One of the most incredible things about our award winning formula is that it includes a magic ingredient, as soon as the oil touches water it emulsifies and turns into a milky consistence, making the oil really easy to wash out leaving a squeaky clean scalp. You then follow with your normal washing routine, I personally cleanse once with our Daily Calma Shampoo.

4. We recommend to start using our En Root Oil once a week, fitting it a routine where you have some time to relax and let the product work its magic. Top tip – you can multi-task by leaving aconditioner on the tips at the same time.
