What is biotin?

Biotin, the name given to Vitamin B7, is a water-soluble vitamin found in a variety of food sources such as -
● Beef liver
● Nuts and seeds
● Sweet potato
● Salmon
● Eggs

Biotin does occur naturally in the body, formed from the bacteria in the gut however as the vitamin is water-soluble, it is not stored in the body as it is excreted out. One of the main roles Biotin plays in the body is breaking down fats, proteins and carbohydrates, converting them to energy. It is also important to have a constant source of Biotin for the proper regulation of gene expression and cell signalling (healthy functioning)

How does Biotin improve hair?

Our hair and nails are made up of a protein called Keratin. You may have heard of Keratin fromthe ‘Brazilian Blow Dry’ which adds Keratin to damaged hair. In essence, Keratin is essential forthe structural health and condition of our hair and nails. So what has Biotin got to do with this? Biotin plays a vital role in protein synthesis, helping the body to convert proteins from food in to the Keratin that makes up hair and nail cells. Although relatively rare, some people can be deficient in Biotin, and they will likely notice thinning hair or weaker strands as a result.

Certain groups of people can be at higher risk of Biotin deficiency, those include:
● People with a high alcohol consumption
● People coping with a chronic illness
● Pregnant or breastfeeding women
● People with digestive disorders

These groups can often struggle to properly absorb Vitamins from their diet and can become deficient as a result. This is where gut health is vitally important for our overall health and wellbeing and to ensure we gain as much goodness from foods and supplements as possible.

What else could be causing my hair loss?

Whilst the most common triggers for hair loss are stress, nutrient deficiencies, hormone imbalances and age, it can also be triggered by a thyroid condition, a recent pregnancy or an inflammatory condition. When the body is not firing on all cylinders, hair growth quality can be affected. Just like if you have ever noticed dents in your nails after a period of illness the same can happen with hair.
