What do mushrooms do for my hair?

We hear you! You may be asking why is my hair care company bringing out a mushroom supplement... well there are some very good reasons why. Besides the amazing health benefits we discuss in the article, research has shown that Lion's Mane Extract can help to regrow nerves, strengthen the immune system and improve cognitive function.

But the real reason we decided to add this potent Organic Lion's Mane Mushroom to our collection is simple and points back to our golden rule when it comes to hair health. 'Great Hair Starts With Self Care' This is our company mission statement and means that to truly improve the hairs health and condition you need to do more than just change your shampoo!  Hair comes from within, and therefore taking care of the body, physically, mentally, emotionally and nutritionally is all part of the process which is why self care is so important for general health and wellbeing and when you start to implement these positive changes, trust us, you will notice big improvements not just in your hair but in other areas of your life.

Taking a Lion's Mane supplement daily was one of the things our founder Laura Tudor did as she felt it really helped her with clarity of thought which she believes really helped her manage her stress and ultimately recover her hair from hair from stress related hair loss.

What is Lion's Mane?

Lion's Mane is a medicinal and edible mushroom given its name due to its unusual appearance of white shaggy tendrils that looks similar to a Lion's mane as it grows.

Used in eastern medicine for thousands of years to help treat digestive conditions Lion's Mane is now being praised as a Nootropic ( Cognitive enhancing supplement ) as new science is uncovering the amazing potential this clever little mushroom has to offer.

The mushroom can be eaten raw or pan fried in butter and when done so people report it having a taste/texture combo similar to Lobster! It can also be steeped and used in a brew which is how it is traditionally used for helping the gut however most of the real bio active components that have the Nootropic benefits are only obtained through extraction processes.

Our Organic Lion's Mane Supplement is the Rolls Royce of Lion's Mane Extract's with an 18:1 dual extract resulting in a high quality and potent extract abundant in beta-D-glucan rich polysaccharides to improve skin conditions and strengthen the immune system. Two ‘smart’ compounds, Hericenones and Erinacines, are found in the Lion’s Mane mushroom and can help to protect the brain from degeneration and are also known to promote nerve regeneration and neurogenesis (how cells are produced).

Here's a look at 5 amazing health benefits of Lion's Mane Mushroom

1. Could help to protect against Dementia.

As we age, our brains typically become less able to create new neural connections which is why their is a link between age and a decline in mental functioning in older adults.

Two compounds found in Lion's Mane Mushroom, Hericenones and Erinacines, have been shown in studies to actually increase nerve growth factor (NGF) in the brain, helping to regrow new brain cells proving it to be extremely beneficial for supporting brain health and the functioning of the nervous system

Whilst more studies are needed the evidence is very enticing with some mice studies showing improved memory function

2. Helps to relieve mild anxiety and depression.

Compounds found in Lions's Mane have amazing anti inflammatory properties which helps to relive the symptoms of depression as chronic inflammation is linked to depression.

Animal studies have shown that Lion's Mane extract helps improve functioning in the Hippocampus, a region of the brain responsible for memories and emotional responses. This could explain why in human studies, many people report mood enhancement and clarity of thought.

3. Reduces Inflammation and Oxidative Stress.

It is well known that chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are leading causes of disease and autoimmune disorders. Research shows that compounds in Lion's Mane Extract have powerful Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant properties that may help to reduce the impact of these diseases as well as having a preventative effect.

In one study looking at the amount of Antioxidant properties of 14 mushrooms Lion's Mane came fourth and was recommended as a great dietary supplement for its Antioxidant activity.

 4. Reduces risk of heart disease.

Lion's Mane Mushroom has been shown in research to be very effective at reducing the factors known to lead to heart disease and stroke.

The major risk factors for heart disease include obesity, high triglycerides, large amounts of oxidised cholesterol and an increased tendency to get blood clots.

In animal studies, Lions Mane Extract was shown to improve fat metabolism and lower triglyceride levels with some findings that Lion's Mane was effective at reducing weight gain.

Other studies have shown Lion's Mane extract to be effective at preventing the oxidisation of cholesterol in the blood stream.

Oxidised cholesterol molecules tend to attach to the walls of arteries, causing them to harden and increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Therefore, reducing oxidation is beneficial for heart health.

Further to that Lion’s Mane mushrooms contain a compound called Hericenone B, which can decrease the rate of blood clotting and lower the risk of heart attack or stroke!

5. Could help to protect against cancer cells

More human trails are needed to label Lion's Mane as effective for helping to treat cancer however what research has been done is very promising.

For instance, in a 2011 study published in Food & Function, tests on human cells revealed that lion's mane may help knock out Leukemia cells.

In addition, a 2011 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that lion's mane extract helped reduce the size of cancerous colon tumors in mice. The study's findings suggest that lion's mane may help fight off colon cancer, in part by increasing activity in certain cells involved in the immune response. Another study found that the extract might help reduce the spread of colon cancer cells to the lungs.

In Summary

Whilst more human trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness Lion's Mane certainly shows amazing promise for helping with a variety of conditions and is a great supplement to take to help support brain, heart, digestion and immune function as well as regulating mood.

Our founder Laura Tudor has taken Lion's Mane supplement for several years and says "I have been very interested in nootropics for a few years now. It makes total sense to me to take supplements that help to support the most complex super-computer in the known universe, the brain! There are so many benefits of Lion’s Mane and taking it daily helps me to really focus with a calm mind and mental clarity. It gives me the edge I need to cope with the busy lifestyle so many of us lead now
