1. Could help to protect against Dementia.

Two compounds found in Lion's Mane Mushroom, Hericenones and Erinacines, have been shown in studies to actually increase nerve growth factor (NGF) in the brain, helping to regrow new brain cells proving it to be extremely beneficial for supporting brain health and the functioning of the nervous system

Whilst more studies are needed the evidence is very enticing with some mice studies showing improved memory function 

2. Helps to relieve mild anxiety and depression.

Compounds found in Lions's Mane have amazing anti inflammatory properties which helps to relive the symptoms of depression as chronic inflammation is linked to depression. 

Animal studies have shown that Lion's Mane extract helps improve functioning in the Hippocampus, a region of the brain responsible for memories and emotional responses. This could explain why in human studies, many people report mood enhancement and clarity of thought. 

3. Reduces Inflammation and Oxidative Stress.

It is well known that chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are leading causes of disease and autoimmune disorders. Research shows that compounds in Lion's Mane Extract have powerful Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant properties that may help to reduce the impact of these diseases as well as having a preventative effect. 

In one study looking at the amount of Antioxidant properties of 14 mushrooms Lion's Mane came fourth and was recommended as a great dietary supplement for its Antioxidant activity.

 4. Reduces risk of heart disease.

Lion's Mane Mushroom has been shown in research to be very effective at reducing the factors known to lead to heart disease and stroke. 

The major risk factors for heart disease include obesity, high triglycerides, large amounts of oxidised cholesterol and an increased tendency to get blood clots. 

In animal studies, Lions Mane Extract was shown to improve fat metabolism and lower triglyceride levels with some findings that Lion's Mane was effective at reducing weight gain.

Other studies have shown Lion's Mane extract to be effective at preventing the oxidisation of cholesterol in the blood stream.

Oxidised cholesterol molecules tend to attach to the walls of arteries, causing them to harden and increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Therefore, reducing oxidation is beneficial for heart health. 

Further to that Lion’s Mane mushrooms contain a compound called Hericenone B, which can decrease the rate of blood clotting and lower the risk of heart attack or stroke!

5. Could help to protect against cancer cells 

More human trails are needed to label Lion's Mane as effective for helping to treat cancer however what research has been done is very promising. 

For instance, in a 2011 study published in Food & Function, tests on human cells revealed that lion's mane may help knock out Leukemia cells. 

In addition, a 2011 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that lion's mane extract helped reduce the size of cancerous colon tumors in mice. The study's findings suggest that lion's mane may help fight off colon cancer, in part by increasing activity in certain cells involved in the immune response. Another study found that the extract might help reduce the spread of colon cancer cells to the lungs.

In Summary 

Whilst more human trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness Lion's Mane certainly shows amazing promise for helping with a variety of conditions and is a great supplement to take to help support brain, heart, digestion and immune function as well as regulating mood.
